Pie Iron Tacos

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 Tbsp taco seasoning
  • 2 Cups shredded cheese
  • 8 tortillas (street taco size)
  • cooking spray

Optional Toppings or Add-ins

  • canned green chiles
  • chopped jalapenos
  • diced tomatoes
  • chopped lettuce
  • salsa
  • sour cream
  • hot sauce
  • black beans
  • black olives

Extra Equipment Needed at the Campsite

  • round pie irons
  • charcoal
  • cutting board
  • hot pads or BBQ gloves
  • small knife


Before You Leave Home

  1. Place ground meat and taco seasoning in a skillet over medium heat and cook until browned. Break ground beef into small chunks with a spatula.
  2. Cool meat and then place into a plastic ziptop bag. Refrigerate.
  3. Chop veggies. Place them into a plastic ziptop bag and refrigerate.

Cooking Your Pie Iron Tacos

  1. Get your fire started.

  2. Preheat your pie irons.

  3. Remove pie irons from fire and spray insides with cooking spray.
  4. Place a tortilla on one side of the pie iron.
  5. Add grated cheese on top of the tortilla.
  6. Add meat on top of the tortilla and another sprinkle of grated cheese.
  7. Place the second tortilla on top of the meat mixture.
  8. Close and clip your pie irons. Cut off any tortilla that is sticking out of the pie iron.
  9. Place pie irons in the coals for 5 minutes on one side. Flip and cook for approximately 2-3 more minutes on the other side.

  10. Pie iron tacos are done when the tortilla is lightly browned and the meat/cheese mixture is warm and melted.
  11. Cover with desired toppings and enjoy!
